Hypothyroidism - How to Prevent
Hypothyroidismis a very common condition that has not been resolved. It is very common on the elderly people above the age of 50 years. Its symptoms at times can be very severe but at times they are mild while in other cases the sufferer may not experience any symptoms. Among the things that causes hypothyroidism includes poor diet, stress, medical circumstances, glandular troubles, goiters, severe ailments and diabetes. Medications that are prescribed to the hypothyroidism patients can also have side effects that can be classified as symptom which must be shared with the doctor.
Hypothyroidism has a variety of symptoms which includes; fatigue, weakness, increase in weight, problems in losing weight, dry and rough hair, loss of hair, pale skin, alteration in melanin levels, cold intolerance, constipation, depression, irritability, loss of memory, lack of concentration, abnormal monthly periods, lack of sex drive, problems in sleeping, hunger and lack of appetite.
Many of these sign are not severe but leaving them unattended to may cause harm to your body performance. Hypothyroidism can be treated either conservatively or physically. In conventional treatment, artificial methods are used. This is not a recommended method because it has its side effects. In the natural way, pig thyroid glands are mostly used because apart from them having thyroid hormones, they also contain thyroxin.
Hypothyroidism can be prevented in a variety of ways because it can be caused by various means. Among the ways that can be used to prevent hypothyroidism include:
- Using the thyroid collar. This collar is very vital while getting yourself thyroid x-rayed. This collar has heavy lead lining and is placed on the neck before an x-ray is taken. This collar is used to minimize the radiations that are produced by the x-ray machine. These radiations are very harmful to the head and may interfere with the normal functioning of the brain. Apart from damaging the brain, the radiations might augment the risk of having hypothyroidism.
- Avoid smoking. The smoke caused by cigarettes is very harmful to the thyroid glands. The smoke contains very harmful toxic substances that might cause thyroid disease. The eyes may also be affected by serious disease a condition associated with the thyroid disease. This is very common amongst heavy smokers. Therefore it is advisable that you abstain from smoking and having naked x-rays.
